John Bellany

John Bellany is an artist i've always admired, i studied him at standard grade and higher art in school and was lucky enough to witness some of his pieces up close when we took a trip to edinburgh in first year of the course.

Sadly he has been struck with an illness called macular degeneration, which causes loss of central vision. This ultimately means that he finds it difficult to see faces and is therefore now classed as being blind, despite eventually effecting the quality of his art, for now he is managing to paint depending on the lighting conditions.

Due to this, at a recent auction in Glasgow's Govan his works needed to be revalued as they were done so before this devastating news and were believed to attract buyers and sellers from all over the world, selling for quite a hefty sum. 137 of his works were included in a mixture of medium; watercolours, oils, drawings and a few rare etchings.

Here are an example of some of his paintings

He has quite a unique style which was easily recognisable and will be greatly missed.
